PHAROS: The International Association of Photo Archives is an international consortium of leading art-historical photographic archives and research institutions dedicated to the development of artresearch.net. This free, interoperable digital research platform is designed to provide unified access to the digitized images, archival documentation, and scholarly metadata held by its member institutions, thereby advancing research in art and architectural history, photography studies, archaeology, provenance studies, the history of collecting and of the art market, archive and museum studies, conservation, digital humanities and related disciplines. Conceived as a dynamic and continually developing research environment, the platform currently provides access to more than 2.8 millions images and their associated metadata. Membership currently (2026) includes twelve institutions in Europe and North America, with an overall volume of 31 million photographs and related archival materials. PHAROS is committed to an inclusive, transnational history of art and is therefore actively seeking to expand its focus by gradually including new members in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
